On-campus looks easier but costs more. Is the difference worth it in the first year?

On campus is worth it for the first semester if you can afford it, mainly because it solves the friends problem for you. After that most people move out — share houses are cheaper and you have worked out which suburbs you actually want to live in. If you go straight to a share house, try to see it in person or send someone you trust, and never pay a deposit for a place nobody has visited.
